Javelin

JAVELIN

Athletes are under the instruction of the chief official at all times. This event has the potential to be hazardous.  Please ensure you listen to any instructions given.

A javelin is a form of spear and as such is a lethal weapon, which can be deflected by gusts of wind.  Officials in the field must watch carefully because as the Javelin comes toward them it may appear to be a smaller object than it is.

  1. The javelin must be held at the grip.  It should be thrown over the shoulder or upper part of the throwing arm, and must never be slung or hurled. Non-orthodox styles are not permitted.
  2. A throw shall be valid only if the tip of the metal head strikes the ground before any other part of the javelin. The javelin does not have to stick in, but marking is easier if it does. When a javelin descends at a very low angle with the ground it may bounce shortly before producing what looked likely to be a fair landing.  This must be carefully watched to see if the point impacts first.
  3. The competitor must watch the fall of the javelin, and must not leave the runaway (sector) till the judge indicates a fair throw. They then must leave from behind the arc.  If they cross the arc at any part of it  is a 'No Throw".
  4. It shall be a foul throw if at any time after they have commenced, any part of their body or limbs touches the lines or markings, or the grounds outside the runway or if the thrower improperly releases the javelin in the attempt.
  5. For a valid throw the javelin must fall within the inner edges or the landing sector.
  6. The measurements of each throw shall be made immediately after the throw from where the tip of the metal head, first strikes the ground to the inside edge of the arc along a line from the point of landing to the centre of the circle of which the arc is part.
  7. The javelin must be carried back to the starting line. Never thrown back.
  8. It is illegal to tape two or more fingers together unless to cover an open cut or wound.  The use of gloves is not allowed. So in order to obtain a better grip competitors are permitted to use a suitable substance on their hands only. To protect the back and spine a leather belt can be worn.
  9. Markers can only be used at the side runway if supplied by organisers committee.  If there are no markers, adhesive tape may be used in its place.

When using the javelin whether in coaching or in competition, safety should be the main concern of all participating.  Javelins should be carried back, they must never be thrown back to the starting area.  During competition when there are other events going on, extra care must be taken, for example a rope can be erected so as to keep young and older children out so that the only thing officials and competitors have to worry about is the javelin.
